Ten years ago, Chimi Lham embarked on her homestay journey, starting it all by herself. The idea took shape when the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) suggested the venture, though she worried about managing with few resources and whether guests would come. Initially, there were no guests, and Chimi almost gave up. Encouragement from her brother and children kept her going. With additional help from the then Tourism Council of Bhutan (now Department of Tourism), and by promoting her business on social media, guests started arriving. Running a homestay involves basic tasks like cleaning, making beds and cooking meals while ensuring an authentic and immersive experience for her guests. Chimi's homestay started small, but with more guests, she extended it by building more rooms. The income from the homestay plays a crucial role in sustaining Chimi's household and raising her children. Having this extra income makes life better, as compared to relying solely on farming. Chimi's homestay success highlights that, with perseverance and some help, even small beginnings can lead to positive changes.
