In the quaint village of Wangsa in Haa, Kinley Wangmo embarked on a journey eight years ago that set her apart as the only homestay host in her community. Starting a homestay wasn't an easy feat for Kinley. It required resources and dedication, making her the sole pioneer in her village. The initial struggles included a lack of amenities and resources, coupled with the challenge of not knowing how to navigate the process. However, after a year, Kinley became accustomed to hosting guests, and the demand grew.
With a growing number of guests, Kinley decided to build another cottage for her personal use. Surprisingly, guests began requesting to stay in the new cottage as well. This sparked the idea to expand the rooms and transform more of her space into homestay accommodations.
The increased interest brought more guests, particularly those drawn to the Sagala Trek and the nearby Lhakhang Karpo and Narpo. While conversing with guests presented challenges due to language barriers, Kinley persevered, determined to provide an authentic homestay experience.
Recently, she has seen a rise in guest numbers, and the influx has proven beneficial for raising her children and supporting their education. Kinley is resolute in her desire to continue, recognizing the positive impact her homestay has on both her family and the visitors seeking a slice of Bhutanese life in the heart of Wangsa.
