Jam Tshering Homestay

Description

At 27, Jam Tshering faced a serious illness that briefly interrupted her plans to get married. After she recovered, she considered going to a monastery to practice Dharma, but decided to stay back to help her parents and siblings. This choice led her to the unexpected path of running a homestay, providing her with solace and purpose. Ten years into starting the homestay, Jam Tshering found herself amongst the first three households in the village to embark on this new venture. Despite initial doubts, she embraced the trade, supported by the government and her hard work. Overcoming skepticism, Jam Tshering's determination prevailed, challenging stereotypes about a single woman managing a homestay.

The homestay not only flourished but also became a platform for nurturing Jam Tshering's extended family. Hosting guests provided her nieces and nephews with valuable opportunities to interact with foreign visitors, improving their English skills and broadening their worldviews.

Reflecting on the journey that began 30 years ago when she built her house, Jam Tshering emerged as a steadfast support for her parents. The garlands of eggshells, a unique tradition in her homestay, became a source of intrigue for guests, sparking conversations about family heritage and the enduring ties that bind generations.

In Jam Tshering's story, the threads of resilience, family, and the transformative nature of homestays weave together, creating a simple narrative that reflects her unexpected and rich journey in preserving tradition and embracing change.
